Exercise is good......even at our age!
Physical activity is important for all older adults. Typically as we move through the ageing cycle the amount of physical activity we do declines and therefore our sedentary behaviours increase with age. Physical function, mobility and the ability to perform activities of daily living also declines with age. Being sedentary or not doing enough exercise can be extremely deterimental to our health, increasing the risk of developing chronic diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke and even cancer.
The good news is that it is not all doom and gloom and the benefits of doing regular physical activity and exercise in later life can signifcantly reduce the risks of developing such medical conditions. The benefits of doing regular exercise include:
good physical and psychological health and wellbeing
reaching/maintaining a healthy weight (combined with a reduction in calorie intake through dietary control)
preserving physical function, mobility and importantly independence
