Rain might have stopped play but the smiles shone through at this year’s Herts Youth Games! Over a thousand young people aged from eight to sixteen flocked to the Hertfordshire Sports Village from across the county to compete in eight sports events. Representing their Districts and Boroughs and wearing distinctive team colours athletes competed in aquathlon (swimming and running), badminton, cricket, basketball, table tennis and sports hall athletics.
Outside, the event competitors, organisers and volunteers had to dodge the heavy but fortunately intermittent showers which failed to curb either their enthusiasm or competitiveness. Indoor sports were no less keenly fought with many event winners being decided by the final match! Team East Herts were the overall winners with 49 points, closely beating Team St Albans into second place by just a few points.
Tony Marmo, games organiser and representing the Herts Youth Games Association, said: “It has been a fantastic day with all the athletes showing healthy rivalry and bucket loads of enthusiasm. The event couldn’t be the success it is each year without the unstinting support of our Herts Youth Games young volunteers and sports club organisers without whom the event could not take place.”
