hertfordshire coaching conference 2009

UK Coach of the Year at Herts Coaching Conference

British Cycling Head Coach, Shane Sutton – recently named Coach of the Year at the UK Coaching Awards – delivered the keynote address at the 2nd Annual Herts Coaching Conference, held at the Hertfordshire Sports Village, University of Hertfordshire on Sunday 22nd February 2009.

The Australian – a key figure behind the dominance enjoyed on the track by the UK’s cycling stars at the Beijing Olympics - followed in the footsteps of fellow countryman and rugby World Cup winning coach Eddie Jones, who delivered the keynote address at the 2008 inaugural Conference, and shared  with delegates some of the key drivers behind his success, and how coaching has made such a huge difference to his life.

The inspirational coach and straight talking Aussie is recognised as the heart and soul of British Cycling.  He still cycles many miles on a daily basis and is a former Commonwealth Gold Medallist and Tour of Britain stage winner.  But, he missed the major titles and rewards he strived for as a competitor and therein lays his genius as a coach.  He was left wanting more and regretting all the mistakes he made as a young man and as a young rider.

His story -  charting his rise from a rebellious teenager to the pinnacle of British coaching  - endeared him to delegates at the conference , which was aimed at coaches of all levels and across all sports living or operating in Hertfordshire.

Other speakers at the event included former GB swimming coach Hammy Smith; former Olympic coach and Technical Director for the Oscar winning movie, Chariots of Fire, Tom McNab; leading Australian physical educationalists Alan Launder and Wendy Piltz; and former coach to tennis superstar Tim Henmam, Tim Newenham.

The coaching conference concluded a week long of events as part of Herts Coach Education Week 2009 (16 – 21st February 2009).
