Do you have a talent that could be of use to your local community? Herts Sports Partnership would love to hear from you, and what’s more they are offering up to £100 of free training!
We can all get a great deal out of volunteering such as improving career prospects or simply having fun while meeting new people. The Partnership’s ‘Active Together’ programme offers free activities like dancing, table tennis, badminton, and bowls and even new age curling for over 50’s. And they’re looking for volunteers, young and older, to help organise these sessions.
The roles available are varied and can include assistant activity leaders, general administration, marketing and fundraising. So if you’d like a new challenge why not think about giving something back to your community. Even if you simply enjoy preparing refreshments and drinks or taking photographs your contribution will be welcome!
One local volunteer, Mr Peter Hillier, group secretary explained: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for me at my age. Not only am I getting out of the house and being more active, but I am also mixing with new people in the village and making valuable friendships. Volunteering has been very fulfilling for me as I am always learning new skills and am able to support less able local residents to become involved in the community.”
Mrs Sheila Daniels, who helps out locally as a group treasurer, also thinks that the Active Together project has been a major benefit for her, giving her the opportunity to get involved with exercise, both as a volunteer and participant. It has also provided her with a form of respite from her role as a carer for her Husband Roy, 75, who’s also a member of the group, and is recovering from cancer and diabetes. Mrs Sheila Daniels said: “Since being diagnosed, I have seen big changes in Roy’s mood and general outlook. Coming along to the Active Together session is ideal for me as it enables me to enjoy exercise again, as well as giving Roy an outlet, so he feels happier, more sociable and less isolated.”
In calling for enthusiastic volunteers, Joe Capon, Herts Sports Partnership Project Officer said: “I would urge anyone out there with a bit of time on their hands who is willing to help us coordinate and deliver fantastic community sessions, to get in touch.”
