The Active People Survey was commissioned by Sport England and carried out by Ipsos MORI. It measures levels of participation in sport and active recreation including not only the type of activity but also the frequency, intensity and duration. In addition, a range of other important sport related measures are included such as club membership, involvement in competition, receiving tuition or coaching and contributing to sport through voluntary activity. The survey also provides wide ranging demographic information to enable the identification of participation by different social groups.

APS4 (09/10) Headline data
The fourth year of the survey, Active People Survey 4, started in mid October 2009 and ran continuously for 12 months until the middle of October 2010. Headline results were published in December 2010. Since the first survey (APS1) 05/06 participation levels in Hertfordshire have remained static. This is the same as the picture nationally and is an achievement to keep participation levels static. Welwyn Hatfield district have seen a 5.6% increase in participation levels since APS1 which is a fantastic achievement. All other districts have remained static. Some districts have seen an increase in participation but the increase is slightly lower than the increase needed to make it a statistically significant change.
More detailed data from APS4 is available on the diagnostic tool above.
APS3 (08/09) Local Profiles
A set of Active People Survey district profiles were prepared by Sport England East, in partnership with HSP, summarising results from APS3 and providing some comparisons with APS1. These can be downloaded below.
Local Sport Profiles
Nationally, Sport England has also produced the Local Sport Profile Tool, which was published in September 2010. This has been developed to help local authorities in England to generate a sporting profile for their area in the form of charts and tables, bringing together data on sporting participation and provision. Profiles for the county and each Local Authority can be found below and guidance notes explaining the profiles can be downloaded here:
